Process-Driven Utility Systems Engineering

Utility systems engineering supports new facilities, plant expansions and infrastructure upgrades.

Industrial Utility Infrastructure That Supports Production

Utility systems are the foundation that industrial facilities depend on. When electrical distribution, steam, compressed air, water, and gas systems are undersized or poorly integrated, they become the constraint that limits production.

At Cortex, utility systems are engineered in direct alignment with process loads, facility constraints, and expansion plans. We evaluate infrastructure early and engineer it to meet current and future demand, and coordinate across disciplines to utility systems are ready when production needs them.

Utility Load Development & Capacity Evaluation

Utility systems design and upgrades begins with defined process requirements and is developed to integrate cleanly with production goals, from early stage engineering to construction ready packages.

Capabilities include:

  • Electrical load development aligned with process equipment and controls
  • Steam demand analysis
  • Compressed air, nitrogen, carbon dioxide systems
  • Water system for pretreatment and wastewater treatment
  • Identification of infrastructure bottlenecks and capacity limits

Electrical Distribution & Power Systems

Electrical infrastructure must support process equipment, automation systems and have room for future expansion. We define distribution architecture from substation through MCCs and power panels, which are coordinated with process and automation requirements.

Capabilities include:

  • Substation coordination and power availability review
  • MCC and distribution panel specification
  • One-line diagram development
  • Conduit and cable tray routing coordination
  • Heat tracing and lighting system coordination

Steam, Compressed Air & Process Utility Systems

Process facilities depend on reliable utility delivery. We design systems for steam, compressed air and specialty gases,, process water systems and related infrastructure to meet defined production demands and integrate them within the constraints of active facilities.

Capabilities include:

  • Steam generation and distribution design
  • Compressed air system design
  • Process and utility water system coordination
  • Nitrogen, CO₂, and specialty gas system design
  • Utility routing within active operating facilities

Integration & Expansion Coordination

Utility systems don’t operate in isolation but must integrate with structural, mechanical and control systems. Design is coordinated across disciplines to ensure constructability and long-term flexibility. We leverage 3D modeling to confirm routing and clearance prior to installation.

Capabilities include:

  • Coordination with process and mechanical layouts
  • Evaluation of infrastructure for future expansion
  • Integration with automation and control systems
  • 3D Modeling to confirm routing and develop issue for construction packages
  • Construction-ready utility drawing packages

Who This Service Supports

Utility Systems Engineering supports facilities where reliable infrastructure is a prerequisite for production — and where infrastructure decisions made early have a direct impact on capital cost, schedule, and long-term operational flexibility.

Testimonials

Why Clients Choose Cortex

I have worked with Cortex for about 15 years. They have done lots of 3D design work, including for an $11MM HDPE reactor debottleneck and a $30MM waste treatment plant. They bring a great skill set to these projects and are agile and able to adjust to changing conditions."
Their use of the latest technology in producing these packages across multiple disciplines provides exacting details to reduce scope changes and field busts thus reducing the total installed costs of projects. The long-term relationship that we have developed with Cortex provides an experienced background that is influential in bringing project to a successful conclusion."
They provide timely updates, openly discuss challenges and options, and make it easy for stakeholders to understand. They proactively identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising system performance or reliability."
Most recently, I had Cortex develop FEL2/3 estimates for six Turnaround projects (three MCC replacements and three piping/ structural projects). All of these projects were well within the error band comparedto when we developed estimates after detailed engineering. I have been pleased with the work that Cortex has performed for me over the years."
Working with Cortex has been exceptional across every phase of the project. Their dedication to transparency, thorough scope development, and clear communication builds confidence from day one. They take the time to understand every operational requirement, clearly define deliverables, and lay out realistic expectations to minimize risk, prevent scope creep, and ensures everyone starts the project aligned."
Cortex has a long history of being instrumental in developing both turnaround and non turnaround capital projects. We have used Cortex to develop competent IFC drawing packages and estimates from scope descriptions."
They have a strong understanding of our internal engineering standards. They consistently uphold internal specifications, industry best practices, and quality expectations in every aspect of design, programming, documentation, and implementation."
